It's been a long time wandering the wilderness. From my perspective, it's not just the losing to get the high picks (very important), but the superb trades the leadership team's been executing over the last couple of years. I'm used to our team being on the losing end of trades, but not so under Dawkins and Winger. Success starts at the top with ownership and these two gents.
"Wandering the wilderness" is a perfect way of describing it. Like you said, the trades have been terrific. Trading Daniel Gafford for the pick that became Kyshawn George, getting what they got for Beal, flipping Jordan Poole for CJ McCollum to later flip McCollum for Trae Young. The list goes on.
Greg - with the injury to TV, looks like D Ayton will need to be a contributor. Have you seen enough to be able to start to project (I know it’s early) how he fits into this year’s team?
Hi Mark, I think Ayton is ready to play an important role as the backup to Sarr and Davis. He started 73 games for a 53-win Lakers team last season and has been a starter for the last six seasons. He's probably overqualified for his bench role, which is a good thing for the Wizards. He was one of the best rim finishers last season, can grab defensive rebounds (which the Wizards desperately need) and protect the rim. I'm quite intrigued by how well he fits with this group.
As a child, I remember elation at winning the title in '78, and crying when they lost in '79 (I still hate Jack Sikma).
There are, of course, no guarantees that this team will win anything. But they have more potential than any team since the Wes-Elvin days.
Go Wizards.
That elation is something this fanbase, yourself included, has been chasing ever since. And like you said, this team could be the one to get there.
